It’s been a while coming, but the Inishowen Independent today launches its new website – and digital edition.
Inishowenindo.ie is set to become the leading location on the Internet for Inishowen folk from near and far to get their fix of local news, views and sport.
We’re also really excited about launching our digital edition which allows you to download the paper to your smartphone, tablet, or personal computer.
While the new digital edition will be subscription only, to celebrate our launch we’re giving away this week’s digital paper for free.
Make sure to let all your friends living overseas, or elsewhere in Ireland, know that our new digital edition is available online for free. So whether they’re in Sydney or Sligo or San Francisco, they can read about what’s happening back here in dear old Inishowen.
The physical newspaper – and newsprint in general – is going to be with us for a very long time to come. But to future proof this business, our newspaper will be available in both hard copy and digital formats while our website will break local news as it happens.
The demise of newspapers has somewhat overstated. Even though the Internet is all pervasive, newspapers remain one of the primary sources for news, and this is even more true of local newspapers.
Who is going to cover local news and events if not your local paper?
Who will break the local news about the post office or the community hospital under threat, or give you the local angle on the big national or international story?
Who will cover your local sports team in their big cup match?
Who will go to the council meetings – or the courts – to keep you, the citizen, informed about what’s happening and what is being done in your name?
Who will send a photographer to capture your wedding day, dinner dance or other special occasion?
Who will tell the stories of a thousand local people every year?
Unfortunately, none of this can be provided without incurring costs. That’s why our paper costs €1.60 each week, and it is also why our digital edition will be a subscription service.
Top quality news, views and sport costs money to deliver. To give everything away for free is to cut your nose to spite your face.
We believe that we have a product worth paying for. For less than a euro a week, you can subscribe to our digital edition whether you live in New York, New Zealand, Newry or Newtowncunningham.
If you are reading this in Inishowen, and you know someone from here who lives overseas or elsewhere in Ireland, let them know that they can log on here today and read the Inishowen Independent on their iPhone or iPad or computer.
