The son of one of the most famous Irish-American politicians of all time has described Buncrana as feeling like home during an emotional speech at the annual Tip O’Neill Irish Diaspora Awards night last weekend.
Tommy O’Neill, son of the former US Speaker Tip, said coming back to Buncrana for the second annual Diaspora Award was ‘like coming home’.
“Coming here is like coming home,” he said. “Our father’s grandparents were born just outside Buncrana so we still see this place as home.
“When you’re an Irish-American, you never forget your Irish roots because it means so much about what we are and who we are.”
A full catalogue of events took place throughout Inishowen, before finishing with the award ceremony, which was hosted by Buncrana Town Council in conjunction with Donegal County Council, in the Inishowen Gateway Hotel. The award is given in recognition of the work of individuals who strive to promote the interests of Ireland on the world stage and this year Democratic Governor of Montana, Brian Schweitzer, was the successful recipient.
Upon receiving the award, Governor Schweitzer, who mother is from Ramelton stated: “This award means award the world to me; it is a wonderful honour to come back to Donegal and be presented with this prestigious award.”
