…but club v country conflict looms
Michael Murphy will be announced as Ireland’s International Rules captains later today, Thursday, the Inishowen Independent understands.Donegal’s 2012 All-Ireland winning captain has been training with the Irish team ahead of the two tests against Australia later this month, with Neil McGee and Patrick McBrearty the other Donegal men in manager Paul Earley’s squad.
Ireland will play Australia on Saturday 19 October in Breffni Park, Cavan, and the following Saturday in Croke Park.
However, the International games threatens to disrupt Murphy’s club season with Glenswilly – should they beat Ardara in this Saturday’s semi final.
The Donegal Senior Football final is fixed for Sunday 20 October, less than 24 hours after Murphy lines out in the first international test in Breffni.
It will create a bad headache for Murphy, Glenswilly and the Donegal fixtures committee whose hands look to be tied. With Ireland playing on the following Saturday in Croke Park, the same problem would arise if the county final were delayed by a week.
And with Donegal’s club champions playing in the Ulster Club Championship on Sunday 3 November, the county final can’t be delayed beyond 27 October.
It seems that Michael Murphy is going to be tugged between club and country later this month.
