Supervalu donate €10,000 to iCARE
‘Only when you see it for yourself you realise how deserving the charity is’

A deserved local charity received an unexpected windfall last week after Supervalu in Buncrana donated a whooping €10,000 to them.
After previously supported charities such as the Donegal Hospice, this year, Supervalu chose Buncrana based iCARE as their dedicated charity and after holding various fundraising events throughout the year, the supermarket is delighted to donate €10,000 to the autism charity.
Bridgeen Doherty, HR and personnel manager in Supervalu Buncrana, said it was important for them to support a charity which was close to home.
“We are delighted to be able to support iCARE,” explained Bridgeen. “As part of the decision making process we went and met with iCARE and visited their base at Ballymacarry and it is only when you see it for yourself and see the children and what they are going through every day that you realise how deserving the charity is.”
Supervalu had aimed to raise €8,000 however thanks to contributions from their customers and staff, they were able to donate €2,000 more than they anticipated.
“We had a number of different fundraising events throughout the year including a night at the races, a car wash, various draws, bag packs, a wax and shave with staff in the Cruiskeen Bar and a fortune teller.
“As well as this every time a customer using their Real Rewards swipe card in store that also clocked up money for iCARE as the company then donated a further €2,000 to our final tally. €1,585 also came from personal donations from over 40 members of our own staff in Buncrana and we’d like to thank everyone who helped us donate this money because without their contributions we wouldn’t be able to do it.”
With their new windfall, iCARE plan to refurbish a new ‘Snoezelen’ room for the children with autism and hope to have money left over to buy a new interactive whiteboard.
“It’s great that we can see the rewards this money will create within iCARE straight away,” added Bridgeen. “Children are their every day some even on Christmas Day because it is part of their daily routine. We’re delighted to be able to do up the Snoezlen room but as well as that iCARE have recently had a prefab donated to them so we want to help refurbish that as – this will act as a part office part computer suite, which should have great benefits,” she concluded.
