A BUNCRANA man was honoured at the national Irish Water Safety Awards in Dublin this week after his quick thinking and action saved two women and two children from death in Ballyliffin last Just.
Buncrana Lifeguard and surf instructor Dan Gallanagh (above) received the Seiko ‘Just in Time’ award from Irish Water Safety for rescuing a mother and her two young sons as well as another local woman at Pollan Beach during the summer.
Visitors to the area, the mother and sons were swept out into Pollan Bay by a strong underwater current while a second woman also got into trouble herself after she had attempted to rescue the stricken trio.
Hero Dan (43), from the Black Farm, Buncrana was on the beach with his wife and son when he witnessed the drama unfolding in front of him.
Speaking to the Inishowen Independent yesterday, Dan said he was delighted to receive the Water Safety Award.
