Fahan mother battles back from breast cancer to complete charity half marathon
An Inishowen mother-of-two, who recently completed a half-marathon to raise funds for Cancer Care West, is certain that she would be dead by now had she missed a routine mammogram appointment two years.
Joy Doherty, from Fahan, felt physically fine when she attended the mobile breast check unit at Letterkenny early in October 2011 but before the end of the month she was undergoing surgery to remove a malignant tumour.
Doctors told her that the breast exam, which subsequently led to a positive breast cancer diagnosis, had saved her life.
The local woman, who is now recovering after a successful lumpectomy, admits that she almost didn’t keep the appointment.
