Anti-austerity campaigner joins race for county council election next year
Inishowen anti-austerity campaigner Joe Murphy has joined the People Before Profit Alliance and will run for office in next year’s county council election, likely to be held on May 22, the same day as European elections.
Murphy, who first rose to prominence after driving to Dublin at 25 miles per hour to protest government cuts in December 2011, says he took the decision to run under the PBPA banner to give voters in the county a viable alternative to the mainstream parties.
He announced his intention after a key meeting earlier this week with representatives of Donegal Action Against Austerity and members of the local Campaign Against Home and Water Taxes.
