New driving licence office opens
But Inishowen drivers find themselves in ‘wrong’ 5%
The Road Safety Authority has defended the location of new National Driver Licence Service centres on the basis that 95% of drivers live within 50km of the new centres – but that is not the case for thousands of drivers in North Inishowen.
Until last week the motor tax office in the Carndonagh Public Services Centre issued driving licences, but from Tuesday a new regime, operated by the Road Safety Authority (RSA), came into effect with drivers having to present themselves in Letterkenny to either get a licence for the first time or apply for a renewal.
A National Driver Licence Service (NDLS) spokesman said: “The locations of the centres have been chosen to ensure 95% of the population is serviced within a 50km radius of a centre.”
