Canning, Donaghey, McCauley and McDermott seek nominations

Patrick McCallion - Martin McDermott - Rory O'ConnorFianna Fáil will run four candidates in May’s Donegal County Council election, with the party set to formally select them on Sunday evening.

MEP Pat the Cope Gallagher will chair Sunday’s selection convention in the Lake of Shadows Hotel in Buncrana where sitting councillors Paul Canning and Rena Donaghey are expected to be joined on the Fianna Fáil ticket by new candidates Martin McDermott (Glengad) and Mary McCauley (Moville). Paddy McGeoghegan from the Isle of Doagh who had indicated that he was interested in seeking a nomination is understood to have withdrawn his candidacy.

Nominations for prospective candidates closed on Tuesday evening.

Rena DonagheyMinister for the Environment Phil Hogan yesterday announced that the local and European elections will be held on Friday 23 May.
