Many Inishowen people targeted by online fraudsters
Revenue has issued an urgent scam alert with many Inishowen people targeted by so-called phising emails in recent days.
The sophisticated emails, sent to hundreds of email addresses in the peninsula, are headed ‘Tax Return For Year 2013’ and offer the would-be user a tax rebate of €371.91 if they first open a ‘government gateway’ account.
Worryingly, the electronic correspondence appears to come from a genuine email Revenue address – firstname.lastname@example.org – and asks recipients to download and complete an attached form to claim their tax refund.
Maresa Hempenstall, Press Officer at the Revenue Commissioners, urged computer users not to respond to the emails currently doing the rounds.
