‘After much deliberation, I have decided to allow my name go forward’
Burnfoot councillor John Ryan has confirmed that he WILL contest May local elections for the Fine Gael party.
There was a degree of shock within Fine Gael and indeed wider political circles when, at last week’s Inishowen Electoral Area meeting, Ryan had said he was considering his position and might not contest May’s election after all.
Cllr Ryan had been selected to run for Fine Gael at the Inishowen selection convention in January, but work commitments, and the difficulty of mixing his role as a public representative with his business interests, had led him to seriously consider leaving elected politics.
However, following discussions with fellow county councillors Mickey Doherty and Bernard McGuinness, and members of the Fine Gael hierarchy, Ryan has decided to go ahead and contest the election.
“I had been considering my position because of work commitments,” Cllr Ryan told the Inishowen Independent yesterday.
