Amazing grace . . . but just for 15 minutes!

Buncrana Town Council debates parking charges

There was a lively debate about changes to car parking charges in Buncrana at Tuesday’s Town Council meeting where councillors heard that an official 15 minute grace period is to be put in place and that money raised from parking will, most likely, remain in Buncrana even after the town council is abolished in May.

Town engineer Donal Walker told councillors that a 15 minute grace period was necessary to allow a reasonable time for motorists to purchase their parking ticket and that this will be clearly stated on the pay and display signage around the town.

However, the draft byelaws published by the council make no mention of an official grace period of any duration. Presumably, the byelaws will have to be amended to reflect the 15 minute grace period.

The bye-laws propose to increase charges in the town’s car parks from 30 cent per hour to 60, and from €1.20 per day to €2.50.
