‘I can’t believe we are now looking forward to our 25th year’

Another successful Moville St. Patrick’s Day parade hailed

When Eamon McLaughlin and Gerard Sona attended the first ever meeting of the Moville St. Patrick’s Day committee in 1990 little did they know that they would still be organising parades almost a quarter of a century later.

The founder members have just awarded prizes to float winners following another successful parade in the seaside town.

Next year they will celebrate a silver jubilee and a 25th annual St. Patrick’s Day festival; parades have meandered through the town every year since 1990 – with the exception of 2001 when Foot and Mouth restrictions caused a cancellation.

Delighted by this year’s event, one of the biggest ever in Moville, committee chairman Eamon McLaughlin remembers that first meeting very well.

“It was held on Friday, February 2nd 1990 in St. Eugene’s Hall. I can’t believe we are now looking forward to our 25th parade because back then we were just trying to organize the first one and get that over us!” he smiled.
