Buncrana unemployment figure falls but remains almost twice national average
The number of people out of work in Inishowen has dropped to its lowest level in more than five years.
The unemployment rate here, based on 2011 census statistics for population, is now running at just under 22 per cent, almost twice the national average.
The figure of 3,851 signing on at the Buncrana social welfare at the end of last month was the lowest since December 2008.
The number for March was the sixth consecutive monthly total to be less than 4,000 after the previous 56 straight months had returned unemployment totals above that figure, peaking at 5,256 out of work in July 2010.
The latest Live Register tally is slightly down on the January (3,900) and February (3,914) numbers with the month of March recording the first decline of 2014.
