Malin Head Coastguard to share in €1 million fund

€333,000 to upgrade IT systems

The Malin Head Coast Guard Station handled 393 emergencies in 2012.

The long-term future of the Malin Head Coastguard looks a lot more secure this week with the Inishowen station set to share in a €1million fund.

Minister Leo Varadkar is set to allocate €333,000 to upgrade the computer systems at each of the country’s three main Coastguard stations, at Malin, Valentia and Dublin.

There had been fears that the government planned to close or downgrade the 24-hour, 7 days per week Coastguard service at Malin Head but the announcement of additional funding appears to signal a shift away from that.

Indeed the Inishowen Independent has learned that the station is also currently recruiting to fill two new positions while a panel of ten reservists, ready to replace retiring roles, will also soon be added.
