Glengad man dedicates poll-topping performance to his ‘proud’ father
GLENGAD man Martin McDermott is the happiest man in Inishowen this weekend after he topped the election poll ahead of all 83 local candidates in Donegal.
With a beaming smile and surrounded by large number of his close family and friends at the election count in Buncrana on Sunday, it was clear that father-of-two was happy and relieved man.
“I never thought I would be in the position I am in,” said the new Cllr. McDermott. “We had a great campaign and the feedback was good on the doorsteps but we were aiming for twelve or thirteen hundred votes. I never thought I’d get more than 2,000.”
The writing was on the wall early on Saturday for the Glengad man when early tallies were putting him at the top of the poll for Inishowen but with a first preference vote of 2,002 – 402 more than the required quota – McDermott’s support blew everyone else out of the water.
“This is a very proud day for me,” he said. “I’ve very proud for my own area in North Inishowen and I want to thank them all for coming out to support me. In Glengad especially I had a great tally.
