However, the possibility of maternity unit closing not ruled out

A REVIEW into maternity services in Letterkenny, which could have seen women from Inishowen travel 300km to Galway to give birth, has been suspended, but not completely ruled out.

Last May, the ‘Inishowen Independent’ reported the HSE were considering closing the maternity unit at Letterkenny General Hospital as part of a review of the services within the West/Northwest Hospitals Group.

The review, which was carried out by D&F Health Partnership, found that maternity services in Letterkenny were not ‘cost-effective or sustainable’.

However, that review has been suspended this week after it emerged that the chairman of HSE’s West/North West Hospitals Group, Noel Daly, also had a 50% stake in the consultancy firm Health Partnership, which carried out the controversial review.
