MOVES are underway to ensure that Ballyliffin Golf Club becomes the venue for the 2019 Irish Open.
Last week, the Royal Portrush secured the British Open for five years time and speculation is rife that Ballyliffin could become the venue for the Irish Open two weeks earlier.
Glengad councillor Martin McDermott said the Council needs to do everything they can to support the Ballyliffin, if they decide to bid for the competition, which would see world-class golfers such as Rory McIlroy, Padraig Harrington and Graeme McDowell flock to Inishowen.
“This could be a massive opening for Inishowen and Donegal as a whole,” said Cllr. McDermott. “The Irish Open attracts hundreds of thousands of people and I think we should be very mindful of that. It is our job to everything we can to promote the county,” the Fianna Fáil told his fellow councillors at a recent meeting of the Inishowen Municipal District.
Ballyliffin Golf Club has already hosted Challenge Tour and European Senior Tour events.
