An Inishowen TD has said that it is ‘entirely unfair’ that no subsidy will be granted to cover the free bus pass scheme for the elderly and disabled on the Buncrana to Derry route.
McGonagle Buses has operated the public route, one of the busiest in Inishowen, since the Lough Swilly company ceased trading three months ago.
Deputy Padraig MacLochlainn said McGonagle’s has been placed in a no-win situation by the Department of Social Protection, which says it will NOT cover the cost of bus pass users travelling from Buncrana to Derry.
“McGonagle buses have been charging half price for those with bus passes up until now and taking a loss on that themselves; but that’s not sustainable so this issues needs to be resolved,” he said.
