Mobile phone roaming rates reduction roundly welcomed

There was good news for Inishowen people earlier this week with stricter caps on mobile phone roaming charges coming into effect from Tuesday, July 1.
The latest reduction in roaming tariffs for calls, texts and data will be particularly welcomed by those who live close to the border and those who regularly travel to the North or abroad.
Under the new rules, announced by European Commission, the cost of data roaming will fall from 40 to 20 cents per megabyte (plus VAT), making a call will decrease from 24 cents per minute to 19 cents while sending a text will drop from 8 cent to 6 cent.
All of that means that a ten-minute phone call while roaming will be capped at a maximum cost of €1.90, down from €2.40 previously, a 20 per cent reduction.
