McHugh vows to take Irish refresher course for new Ministerial role
DONEGAL TD Joe McHugh was delighted on Tuesday when the Taoiseach announced that he would be become the new Minister of State for Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht Affairs.
However, controversy soon arose when it emerged that Carrigart man, Joe, was not fluent in the Irish language.
Former Minister for Gaeltacht Affairs, Fianna Fáil’s Éamon Ó’Cuív, was the first to criticise the new appointment, describing it as a ‘slap in the face’ for the thousands of Irish speakers in the country – and particularly for those in Gaeltacht communities.
He insisted without fluency in Irish, McHugh could not adequately carry out his duties in Gaeltacht Affairs.
