When the squad lists were announced a few weeks before the world cup, I have to admit that I looked at the Brazil squad and wondered who some of the players even were?
Okay they have got through the group stage and in my view were very fortunate to get past Chile and reach the last eight, but my god they are poor compared to the Brazil teams of old.
Take the 2002 World cup winning side in Japan for example. Players like Cafu, Roberto Carlos, Ronaldinho, Rivaldo and Ronaldo were all players that you would get excited about watching.
Even before that and before my time there were players like Zico, Garrincha and the great Pele – players who will be talked about in Brazil for hundreds of years.
This current side simply does not possess these type of players. Yes, Neymar is a good player, in fact he is a very good player but he is not in the same league as Messi or Ronaldo and never will be in my view.
They have a keeper who cannot get a game for QPR, a centre half who Chelsea have just sold for an incredible £50 million (the best piece of business Mourinho has ever done), a left winger in Hulk who couldn’t beat a man to save his life, a midfielder in Paulinho who would struggle to get a game for Ireland and a striker in Fred who has to be the worst to ever grace the World Cup.
If they do go on and win the World Cup, then fair play to them but you would have to think that football is in a bad way if this team were to be called the best in the world.
By the way, even though they have not looked great either, I am becoming even more confident that Argentina will win it as the wee magician is going from strength to strength and he has the abiltity to win the thing on his own, just like Maradona before him!
