Having attained his UEFA B coaching licence last year O’Connor along with Gerard McLaughlin oversaw the first Inishowen team to win a Foyle cup , was in charge of Scoil Mhuire’s team that lost the Senior All Ireland schools final and was part of the management of the Ulster Schools Interpros for the last number of years.
That experience will give the Cockhill man a broad knowledge of the players. He will also be able to liaise with other Academy coaches to run the rule over players that have come through our own system.
With a number of weeks to go to the tournament William will hope to have three or four trial sessions before selecting a squad of twenty players.
This tournament is also a shop window for players to progress to international honours or other opportunities in the game.
He will also be able to draw on the experience of Glengad manager Shane Byrne who has been in the hotseat for a long number of years.
