Buncrana burglar walks free on bail

Serial offender appeals against severity of sentence

page 1 GibsonA serial Buncrana burglar who spat in a garda’s face has walked free from court after appealing against the severity of his sentence.

Jonathan Gibson, 10 Brookside, Buncrana (pictured right), was sentenced to a total of 23 months in prison after pleading guilty to eleven separate charges, including burglary, theft, handling stolen good and assaulting a detective.

However the 25-year-old, who has 49 previous convictions, was released on bail after his solicitor complained that the sentence was too harsh despite the fact that the judge suspended the final ten months of the term.

Gibson, who told Gardai that he had been ‘robbing houses every day of the week’, arrived in Buncrana District Court in handcuffs from Castlerea Prison, where he had been held on remand since an appearance at Carn District Court last June.

Sixteen further charges against the accused were dropped, including a series of thefts, interfering with cars, burglary and criminal damage at twelve different homes in Cloncool Park, Buncrana, where Gibson had been residing.
