Gardaí renew appeal for information after fatal Malin Head fire

Popular Inishowen optician dies in tragic fire

GARDAÍ in Inishowen are continuing to appeal for information following the death of a well-known local businessman in a house fire in Malin Head on Halloween night.

Optician Jeffrey McLaughlin, 42, was found dead at a house at Malin Head in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The popular 42-year-old father-of-three was from Carn and it is understood that his house in Carnmalin, Malin Head was his holiday home.

Mr. McLaughlin, who owned optician businesses in Carn and Buncrana, was a well-known member of the local sub-aqua club.

The fire was first reported just after midnight, with fire tenders from both Carndonagh and Buncrana Fire station rushing to the scene.

Mr. McLaughlin’s body was found outside the property, to the rear, a short time later. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Specialist Garda forensic officers from Dublin arrived at the scene over the weekend to carry out a full investigation into the cause of the fire and the State Pathologist was also informed.

The house was badly damaged in the fire with the roof and masonry completely destroyed and the scene in Malin Head remains preserved while Garda investigations continue.

Locals have reported hearing a loud explosion around midnight.

Gardaí in Inishowen are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information on the fire and particularly those who were in the Carnmalin/Malin Head area between the hours of 8pm and midnight on Friday 31st October 2014, to contact them at Buncrana Garda Station on 074 9320540, or on the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666111 or any Garda Station.
