‘My dad would have been truly humbled’

First Eddie Fullerton Memorial Lecture in Buncrana this weekend
A daughter of Eddie Fullerton has said that her father would be “truly humbled” by a special lecture to be held in his honour in Buncrana this weekend.
Marking the 25th anniversary of his murder, the Eddie Fullerton Memorial Lecture will take place at the Inishowen Gateway Hotel this Saturday, August 27 at 2pm.
Cllr Fullerton was assassinated at his Cockhill home on May 25, 1991.
Amanda Fullerton says the event, which is being hosted by Donegal County Council and coincides with Donegal Heritage Week, is a fitting tribute to her father, who spent twelve years as a popular and hard-working county councillor.
“I think he would have been very, very humbled by this. He would have said – ‘I can’t believe they’re doing all this in my name’,” she said.
Guest speakers at the weekend lecture are Dr Emmett O’Connor, senior lecturer in history at the Ulster University, who will present ‘The Fortunes of the Irish Language’; and New Jersey Professor Breandán Mac Suibhne, who will focus on ‘The Depressed Urbanised Surplus of the Countryside: Derry Volunteers who fought in Donegal, 1920-21’.
Amanda says both speakers were selected because they are “world class historians” with their chosen subjects also being very close to Eddie’s heart.
“Dad was very passionate about all things Irish; the culture, the history and the language – as well as the Irish struggle down through the years.”
