Gardaí continue to probe former Carn-based radio station

Gardaí have this week confirmed that an investigation into alleged fraud at the former Inishowen Community Radio station “is ongoing”.

It is not clear yet whether any charges will be brought but the Inishowen Independent understands that Gardaí have questioned a number of individuals connected with ICR and are anxious to speak to more.

The publicly funded Carn-based radio station, which first went on air in the year 2000, closed down in October 2012 with the loss of eight jobs.

The station’s largest funding group, Pobal, which paid staff wages, formally severed its contract with ICR in August 2012 following a damning audit.

After investigating financial irregularities at the station, Pobal uncovered discrepancies in an audit of how moneys granted were spent in the period 2006-08.

The quango had written to the board of ICR asking that it address issues raised in the audit report, and threatened to terminate funding if the matter was not adequately addressed.
