Inishowen faces further cutbacks to its ambulance service with the HSE set to pull one of its ‘dynamic deployment’ ambulance crews from Letterkenny.
Currently Inishowen relies on an additional ambulance from Letterkenny to act as daytime cover when the Carn ambulance is out on a call.
However the HSE plans to reduce the number of Letterkenny ambulances from five to four, which means that the standby ambulance that had been sent to Carn for the day will now be scrapped.
In effect, Inishowen will be left with one full-time ambulance and only sporadic cover from Letterkenny, Donegal Town or Ballyshannon, if and when available.
In a private memo seen by the Inishowen Independent yesterday, it was learned that the National Ambulance Service plans to downgrade Inishowen because the peninsula has been deemed to have insufficient call-out numbers.
However Cllr Martin McDermott says it’s entirely unacceptable to put statistics ahead of people’s lives.
