Irish language saga continues as cases adjourned until January

24 DRINK driving cases have been held up at Carn Court as solicitors and gardaí await the outcome of a further appeal in the Irish language saga.

Last September the High Court ruled that all breath test certificates should be in both and Irish and English and all certificates that were printed in English only were invalid.

However in May this year, the Court of Appeal overturned the decision after the Director of Public Prosecutions brought the case to the appeals court.

Dozens of suspected drink drivers in Inishowen had their cases adjourned before the district court awaiting the outcome of that appeal.

However it would seem that the saga is not over yet as a further 24 alleged drink drivers had their cases adjourned at Carn District Court last Tuesday and it is believed there are a similar number outstanding on the Buncrana District Court list.

The 24 cases were all adjourned until January 17, 2017, to give the Supreme Court time to consider the case.
