As the country struggles to come to terms with last week’s shocking murder-suicide in Cavan, the coordinator of Inishowen’s domestic abuse service has revealed that a number of women and their children here have been the subject of death threats from violent partners.
Schoolteacher Alan Hawe (41) stabbed his entire family to death, including wife, Clodagh (39), and sons, Liam (13), Niall (11) and Ryan (6), before hanging himself at his home outside Ballyjamesduff.
Mary Doherty, of Lifeline Inishowen, says a number of local women have lived in fear of the same outcome.
She says the latest murder-suicide underlines the importance of services such as Lifeline Inishowen in preventing similar attacks.
