Coast Guard in Clare death sends ripples through local units
COAST GUARD employees and volunteers throughout Inishowen have been left stunned by the death of a female crewmember who died when her vessel overturned during a search operation off Kilkee in Co Clare yesterday.
Two other crewmembers were also airlifted to safety. It is understood that the Coast Guard unit were involved in an ongoing search operation for a man missing when their rigid inflatable boat (RIB) flipped over as they searched near the cliffs at Kilkee.
Watch officer at Malin Head Coast Guard, Paul Gill, says staff are all stunned at the death of the volunteer Coast Guard member yesterday afternoon. Paul says this is the first time the Coast Guard has ever experienced a fatality on duty in its history.
Speaking to the ‘Inishowen Independent’ last night, Mr. Gill said the death was ‘still very raw’. He said it will be like losing a member of their own family for the Coast Guard unit in Kilkee.
