A LOCAL CHAIRTY is urging people to help give ‘boxes of joy’ to poverty stricken children as this year’s shoebox appeal is launched.
Last year over 2,000 gift-filled shoeboxes were collected from Inishowen and distributed to youngsters living in desperate poverty in Romania.
Now, as this year’s campaign is launched, local organiser, Ruth Garvey-Williams hopes that even more shoeboxes can be collected this year.
Speaking to the Inishowen Independent, she said: “I think we will have a tremendous response this year from all the schools getting involved.
“The response to the children is so amazing and they are so overwhelmed, it’s the simple little gifts that make such a difference to their lives.”
Ruth was able to go out to Romania last year to hand-deliver the shoeboxes collected from the peninsula.
“I think the fact that I was able to go out to Romania last year, it has just brought it all home to people that the need is there and the difference that it will make,” she said.
