Post offices under threat again

An Post confirms ‘challenges ahead’ but councillor says further closures are ‘unacceptable’
An Inishowen county councillor is calling on all Oireachtais members in Donegal to back a Dail bill tomorrow opposing any plans to shut more rural Post Offices.
As many as seven hundred Post Offices, including a number in Inishowen, could be under threat because they are not deemed financially viable.
The number, which includes two-thirds of all Post Offices in the country, was revealed by An Post retail operations director John Daly at an Oireachtas Committee on Rural Affairs.
The Inishowen Independent has been informed that Mr Daly’s stark warning was based on a “strictly economic criteria being applied”.
In recent years both Gleneely and Linsfort Post Offices have closed down in Inishowen, however Cllr Martin Farren says it is imperative that no other branches are permitted to shut here.
