A safety review of Buncrana Pier is expected to get underway in the coming days, almost ten months after five people drowned tragically.
Sean McGrotty (49), his sons Mark (12), and Evan (8), his mother-in-law Ruth Daniels (59) and Ruth’s daughter Jodie Lee Daniels (14) all died when their Audi Q7 SUV careered down a slipway and into the water on Sunday, March 20.
It is thought that the tragedy may have been caused by excess green algae on the slipway, which had been open to vehicles at the time.
Donegal County Council confirmed that consultants have now been selected to carry out reviews at one hundred piers across Donegal, including at Buncrana.
The council says any upgrading work identified as necessary by the report will begin before July.
