Coroner raises concerns about ‘copycat suicides’

‘Media should not sensationalise funerals of those who take their own lives’
Donegal’s county coroner has expressed his concern about the reporting of suicides in the media here.
Dr Denis McCauley, who is from Moville, said details of the methods used being made public can often encourage other “copycat suicides”.
He said suicidal thoughts may be largely transitory in nature and that sensationalising funeral coverage can often give those in a transitory state a false perspective on things.
Dr McCauley was speaking in Letterkenny at the first annual HSE media information session exploring issues around suicide prevention and the role of the media in that.
