Random Garda roadside stops to be introduced from March
Roadside drug testing will soon give Gardaí the power to randomly stop and check motorists for driving under the influence of substances.
The on-the-spot exams, which are due to be introduced in March, will test for the presence of prescribed medicine, such as valium and sleeping tablets, as well as illegal drugs such as cannabis, cocaine and heroin.
A local road safety campaigner has welcomed the plan, which will see Gardaí using portable devices similar to those used to detect drink driving which will provide results within minutes.
