One year on: remembering the Buncrana Pier tragedy

The head of the Lough Swilly RNLI says its members will “never forget” the horror of the Buncrana Pier tragedy, which happened one year ago yesterday.

Sean McGrotty (49), Ruth Daniels (59), Jodie-Lee Tracey (14), Mark (12) and Evan McGrotty (8) all drowned when their car slid off the slipway into Lough Swilly on Sunday evening, March 20, 2016.

Their deaths plunged the north-west into mourning and had a profound effect on the emergency services and witnesses who attended the scene that night.

On the first anniversary of the tragic accident, the local RNLI branch says it continues to remember those who were lost and the families and loved ones who mourn them.
