Shock at death of ‘inspirational’ Derry City captain

‘Ryan was a real leader on the field of play but quiet and unassuming off the pitch’
The President of Ireland has led the tributes to Ryan McBride, the Derry City captain whose sudden death at the weekend shocked sports fans across the country.
The 27-year-old, who played in Derry’s 4-0 win over Drogheda at Maginn Park on Saturday afternoon, was found dead at his Brandywell home on Sunday.
The cause of his death is not yet known.
President Michael D Higgins said: “Along with all those who support Irish football, I express my sadness and condolences to the family of Derry City captain Ryan McBride.”
