Loophole closes for banned drivers

DISQUALIFIED DRIVERS now have to hand over their driving licences in court after a legal loophole was closed last week.

Up until now, some drivers who have been banned from being behind the wheel may have broke the law and continued to drive.

They’ve taken the risk, perhaps knowing that if they were stopped by gardai, and asked to produce their licence, guards would not be able to tell instantly if they’re banned.

This is because their driving licence numbers were not recorded at the time of conviction, and the gardai’s pulse system would not have been updated as a result of this.
