IDP to take over tourist offices

Department cancels salary supports with Inishowen Tourism

Inishowen Tourism has insisted that there’s no danger of the tourist offices at Buncrana or Carndonagh closing, even though the Department of Social Protection is cancelling a contract worth more than €100,000 in salary supports.

Johnny McGuinness, vice chairman of Inishowen Tourism, said that staff and services will operate as normal, with the Inishowen Development Partnership expected to form a subsidiary company to take over the day-to-day running of the local offices.

The Department of Social Protection, through Pobal, provides €119,000 through its community services programme (CSP) to Inishowen Tourism Society Ltd to support six jobs in local tourist offices.

The Department said in a statement it will stop funding the Inishowen Tourism CSP, which employs six members of staff, on 30 June, but did point out that officials are working with the Inishowen Development Partnership to explore if and how funding for tourism services here can be maintained.
