Pier Tragedy hearing to start

Tributes at the scene of the drownings at Buncrana pier back in March 2016.

Inishowen’s Coroners Court will host a hearing into the Buncrana Pier tragedy this Friday afternoon.

In an unusual move, coroner Dr Denis McCauley has arranged a ‘pre-evidential hearing’ designed to given an insight into the circumstances surrounding the deaths by drowning of five members of the one family in March 2016.

Sean McGrotty, 49, had been visiting Buncrana Pier with his children Mark, 12, Evan, 8, and baby Rioghnach, along with his mother-in-law Ruth Daniels, 59, and sister-in-law Jodie-Lee Daniels, 14, when his jeep slipped on algae at the pier and went into the Lough Swilly on March 20, 2016.
