First Syrian families arrive in Inishowen

The first group of Syrian families who are to be resettled in Inishowen arrived in Carndonagh last week.

Three families have arrived, with approximately 20 people moving to the town, although the actual number of individuals has not been confirmed by Donegal County Council or the Department of Justice’s Office for the Promotion of Migrant Integration.

The families arrived in Carndonagh last Wednesday, 15 November, having spent several months in the emergency reception and orientation centre in Ballaghaderreen, County Roscommon

Sources suggested that their transfer from Roscommon to Carndonagh came with little notice and happened quite suddenly.

The families have since been settling into their new homes, and are being assisted in that by cultural integration workers who will help them access necessary local services including health, education, childcare and language support.

The Donegal Resttlement Programme will host an information update and cultural awareness evening in the Colgan Hall, Carndonagh, on Tuesday 28 November from 7.30-9.30pm.
