Former Buncrana Garda Station to be auctioned off

The former Garda Barracks in Buncrana
No ‘written submission’ from community or voluntary groups – OPW
THE FORMER Buncrana Garda Station is to go under the hammer later this year, despite interest from local community groups.
The old barracks closed its doors for the last time in 2007, when gardaí moved to a state-of-the-art facility. The historic State-owned building on St Oran’s Road has remained empty ever since, despite interest from Donegal County Council, the HSE and local groups and organisations.
Two weeks ago, The West Inishowen History and Heritage Society told this paper it is to formally seek to acquire it and turn it into a museum and exhibition space.
Following a query from the Inishowen Independent this week, however, a spokesperson for the Office of Public Works (OPW) said contracts for the sale are currently being prepared.
