Retirement of Superintendent Eugene McGovern

Superintendent Eugene McGovern
Tributes have been paid to Garda Superintendent, Eugene McGovern, who is retiring from the force today after 37 years of service.
A native of County Cavan, Supt McGovern has served as the Superintendent in Inishowen for the past seven years and spent almost his entire career in County Donegal.
A married father-of-two now living outside Buncrana, he first became a guard in Donegal Town in September 1983. He was appointed sergeant in Burnfoot in 1991 and spent three months with the UN in Somalia in 1994 before becoming a Garda Inspector at Letterkenny in 1999.
He was subsequently promoted to the rank of Superintendent in 2005, serving in Glenties and Milford before coming back to Inishowen and Buncrana in 2013.
During his time in Inishowen, Supt McGovern attended a number of very difficult fatal scenes, including that of the Mullan family tragedy near Quigley’s Point during his final weeks.
