Quigleys Point Swifts exciting young midfielder Aaron McColgan has been selected for the u14 Ireland development squad that will play in the Hibernia Umbro trophy in Dublin in mid August.
The midfielder who can also play on the left wing or as a left back was very impressive at the Kennedy Cup at the start of the summer, scoring five goals in six games including a hat-trick.
Speaking to the Inishowen Independent last week, William O Connor of the Inishowen Academy spoke of his delight to see Aaron selected. “We are delighted as an academy and as coaches to hear of anybody being selected for an International set up and its great to see somebody as young as Aaron being selected,” said the Inishowen u14 manager.
O Connor believes the call up came for a number of different reasons. “To be honest we always knew that Aaron had loads of ability, but he added serious hard work to this also. “He would work very hard with ourselves and his club Quigley’s Point Swifts and would do a lot on his own, working on his core and fitness levels and this is exactly the type of work that needs to be done in order to reach the higest level,” said O Connor.
The coach also wanted to praise the efforts of McColgan’s team mates at the Inishowen Academy who he believes have really helped Aaron to reach this level. “To be fair to the boys in the squad, they have all been excellent and for Aaron to be training with them every week, it can only be good for him,” he said.
The u14 squad are in action this week in the Foyle Cup and having been the first team from Inishowen to win the competition last year O Connor has high hopes for his side again this year. “We are in a very difficult group with Derry, Glentoran and Limavady but I really believe that if we can play to our full potential we can give it a very good go,” said O Connor.
