Jim Tobin makes comeback at Tully’s Bar
Jim Tobin played with the Firehouse one of the big bands of that era and last played a live gig away back in 1983.
Robbie Cunningham of Tully’s Bar said that persuading Jim Tobin to play in Carndonagh again was a major task.
He said: “Jim Tobin and the Firehouse used to play around these parts a lot.
“They played at the Atlantic Ballroom in days gone by and so I wanted to try and get him to come back to Carndonagh.
“It took me a year of trying before I could get him to agree so we are all looking forward to this night.”
He added: “Jim usually covers stuff from the likes of Jim Reeves and has had a few albums of his own.
“I couldn’t say if this is the start of any sort of comeback for him, but I do know that this is the first time in years that he has played a live show.
“We are looking forward to a good night and it will bring back memories of that show band era for many people.”
Jim Tobin and the Firehouse were one of the big bands of the show band era in the late 1960s.
Formed in 1967, the Firehouse underwent a few personnel changes before Jim Tobin from Tara in County Meath joined them in 1969.
The band had a success with a Jim Reeves song ‘This is it’ which stayed in the Irish charts for three months.
However, problems with management dogged the band and they disappeared from view for a few years in the mid 1970s.
A comeback in later years did have some success but by then the showband era was drawing to a close and things were not the same.
But Jim Tobin’s appearance at Tully’s Bar offers nostalgia fans a chance to take a trip down memory lane.
Hailed as a man with a voice like Jim Reeves, Jim Tobin is sure to be a big hit on October 10.
