I sat down and watched the Champions League final on Saturday evening and to be honest I got what I expected. It was a low scoring game played out by two teams who were prepared to do whatever it took to win the trophy for their club. Now, don’t get me wrong here, the behaviour of people like Ramos and Pepe was despicable; grown men rolling around as if they had just been shot in order to get a man sent off is just embarrassing to watch – it really is. What the game showed me though was that even at the very highest level (to me this is the pinnacle) you can have all the talent in the world but unless you are prepared to work your socks off then the chances are you will come out second best. I must say I was gutted for Atletico as for me they were much the better team from about the 20th minute on. Had Griezmann kept that penalty down in normal time, they would have won the game and deservedly so. I have said this before in this column and I’ll say it again, I absolutely love watching this Atletico team. Not because of the flair or the flicks and tricks (although they can do this do) but because of the sheer effort, determination and unbelievable organisation amongst them.
