Retired teacher dies in house fire

A local grandfather killed in a house fire in Iskaheen at the weekend has been described as a “very intelligent man, with a great sense of humour”.
Gerry McCabe was discovered dead on Saturday morning after concerned neighbours alerted gardaí when they couldn’t gain entry to the house, where he lived alone.
A father of four aged in his early 70s, Mr McCabe was well-known to generations of secondary school students from his time as a science and maths teacher at Scoil Mhuire in Buncrana. He retired from the school in 2004.
It is thought that a gas heater may have caused the fatal blaze, which was confined to the kitchen of the property.
Superintendent Eugene McGovern said gardaí are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire, which was ‘localised’ to the kitchen, in which the victim’s body was found on the floor.
Mr McCabe will be buried on Thursday after his funeral mass in St Mura’s Church, Fahan.
