Bernie Murphy’s textiles a hit at Ploughing 2022

Bernie Murphy's designs take inspiration from the natural landscape around Buncrana.
It’s a busy few days for Buncrana’s Bernie Murphy. World-class textile designer Bernie, who works from her studio in Buncrana, has pride of place representing Donegal at the Local Enterprise Village at the National Ploughing Championships in Ratheniska, Co. Laois 20-22 September.
Over 250,000 people are expected to visit the 50-acre exhibition and trade arena. Each Local Enterprise Office nationwide has one stand to display the goods and services available in its area.
Bernie started her textile training locally in Donegal before extending her skills in Dublin and gaining further qualifications from the North West Regional College and the University of Ulster. She finally came back home to Buncrana to set up her manufacturing base.
She takes her inspiration from Inishowen – “This is where I find my greatest inspiration – where my imagination can feast on the blues and greys of the wild Atlantic ocean, where the fields and hills suggest patchworks, lines and patterns, where the barren lands and peat bogs blend the russets of trees and heather with the neutrals of sheep fleeces and stones… all combine to suggest the structures, colours and textures for my contemporary garment sculptures.”
